Every Riot Junkie product page lists a number followed by "gsm." It's one of the most useful specs in streetwear, and almost nobody explains it. Here's the short version.
GSM = grams per square metre
GSM measures how much one square metre of fabric weighs. A higher number means a denser, heavier fabric. It doesn't tell you everything (knit and fiber matter too), but it's the best quick guide to how a garment will feel and hang.
What different weights feel like
- Under 180 gsm: lightweight. Think standard multipack tees. Thin, soft and clingy.
- 200–250 gsm: midweight. A noticeable step up with more body and less see-through, like our Classic Loose Boxy Tee at 230 gsm.
- 250–320 gsm: heavyweight tee territory. Structured, durable and the sweet spot for a boxy drape, as in the 250 gsm Classic Frayed Boxy Tee.
- 340–420 gsm: fleece and heavy hoodies. Warm and substantial, and the fabric holds its shape. The Heavyweight Vintage Wash Boxy Hoodie is 420 gsm 100% cotton.
- 440 gsm and up: denim and outerwear. Our heaviest piece is the 543 gsm Vintage Wash Zip Up Denim Jacket.

Why heavyweight matters for streetwear
Boxy, oversized silhouettes depend on fabric weight. A light tee in an oversized cut just collapses and clings. A heavy tee stands away from the body, keeps its square shape and drapes in clean folds. That's the look you see in lookbooks.
Heavier fabrics also:
- last longer and resist twisting at the side seams,
- hide what's underneath, so there's no see-through effect on white tees,
- take washes and distressing better, so fades look richer and frayed edges hold up.
Is heavier always better?
Not always. For hot summers, layering or fitted styles, lighter fabrics with stretch make more sense. Our Women’s Ringer Performance T-Shirt uses a 220 gsm stretch fabric because it's meant to move with you. The right weight depends on the job.
