The Best Heavyweight T-Shirts for Streetwear (and How to Pick One)

Riot Junkie heavyweight contrast-stitched cotton tee worn outdoors

A great t-shirt is the cheapest way to look like you know what you're doing. A heavyweight tee holds its shape, hides what's underneath, and drapes in clean folds instead of clinging. But "heavyweight" gets thrown around a lot. Here's how to tell the real thing from a thick-feeling marketing claim, and which Riot Junkie tees we'd start with.

1. Check the fabric weight first

Fabric weight is measured in gsm (grams per square metre). Under 180 gsm is a basic tee. Real heavyweight starts at around 230–250 gsm, and premium boxy tees often sit between 280 and 320 gsm. Every Riot Junkie product page lists the exact number, so you never have to guess.

Washed Rolled Hem Half Sleeve T-Shirt – 350 gsm · Loose fit

The Washed Rolled Hem Half Sleeve T-Shirt is one of our heaviest at 350 gsm of 100% cotton. It stands away from the body, the rolled hem sits flat and the half sleeve hits just above the elbow.

2. Pick a cut that matches how you dress

3. Look at the wash

Garment washing softens heavy cotton, pre-shrinks it and adds depth to the color. That's why a new washed tee feels broken in from day one. Sunfade, snow wash and gradient dyes each give a different character. Our guide to vintage wash vs. sunfade vs. snow wash breaks them down.

The Tiger Stripe Gradient Washed T-Shirt uses a dip-dyed gradient on 250 gsm cotton, so the color shifts from deep to light across the body.

4. Don't ignore the collar

A thick, tight rib collar is the tell of a quality heavyweight tee. Thin collars stretch out and ripple after a few washes. When you try a tee on, the collar should sit flat and close to the base of your neck.

5. Decide how much character you want

Plain heavyweights are the backbone of a wardrobe. Once you have a few, add pieces with more personality: frayed hems like the Classic Frayed Boxy Tee, raw edges like the Snow Wash Raw Edge Cotton T-Shirt or contrast details like the Streetwear Contrast-Stitched Cotton T-Shirt.

Heavyweight vs. midweight: a side-by-side

If you've only owned multipack tees, the jump to a true heavyweight is obvious the first time you put one on. A 160 gsm tee follows every contour of your body and creases at the shoulders. A 250–350 gsm tee keeps its own shape. The sleeves sit out from the arm, the hem hangs straight and the fabric doesn't turn see-through in direct light. That's why heavyweight tees photograph so well and why they're the base of nearly every streetwear lookbook.

Midweight tees still have a place. Around 210–230 gsm, like the Unisex Color Block Drop Shoulder T-Shirt or the Contrast Panel Cotton T-Shirt, you get a softer drape that's ideal for layering under jackets and overshirts. Think of midweights as your layering tees and heavyweights as your stand-alone tees.

How a boxy heavyweight should fit

  • Shoulders: the seam should sit a few centimetres past your shoulder bone.
  • Chest: roughly a hand's width of extra room on each side when you stand relaxed.
  • Length: the hem lands around your hip or upper thigh, never mid-thigh.
  • Sleeves: wide openings that end between mid-bicep and the elbow.

FAQ

Do heavyweight tees shrink?

Garment-washed tees are pre-shrunk, so shrinkage is minimal. Wash cold and tumble dry low to keep the fit.

Are heavyweight tees too hot for summer?

Thick cotton breathes better than you'd expect, and a boxy cut lets air move. For very hot days, a 230 gsm tee is a good middle ground.

What does "100% cotton" add?

Pure cotton is breathable, soft against the skin and takes garment washes beautifully. Most of our heaviest tees, including the Washed Rolled Hem Half Sleeve T-Shirt and the Unisex Vintage Wash Boxy T-Shirt, are 100% cotton for exactly that reason.

How many heavyweight tees do I need?

Three to five covers most weeks: two plain neutrals, one washed or faded piece and one or two with a graphic or distressed detail.

Can women wear boxy heavyweight tees?

Absolutely. Many of our boxy tees are unisex. Women often wear their usual size for a slouchy look or size down for a cleaner fit, and pair them with bike shorts, wide-leg jeans or a mini skirt.
